How to choose the HPS ballasts?

HID lamps require a
hps ballasts to apply starting voltage to the lamp and establish current flow – an “arc” – between the lamp electrodes. Once the lamp is operating, the ballast also regulates lamp current and power.
Magnetic ballast are a simple device that uses a core and coil assembly transformer to perform the minimum functions required to start and operate a lamp. Magnetic ballasts are often found in HID systems.
High pressure sodium lamps have been a staple in outdoor lighting applications for decades. Install a high pressure sodium lamp at your parking lot and in your security system or perimeter lighting. Choose from over 45 of our popular high pressure sodium ballasts.

Once the lamp is selected, the next step is to select the ballast that will be used to drive it. When putting together a
hps lighting system, it is very important to match the ballast to the lamp(s). An easy way to do this is by using the ANSI designation. For example, when using a lamp designated M-57, look for a ballast with that same designation. For lamps with no ANSI designation, it is best to call the lamp’s manufacturer for their recommendation on the correct ballast to use. Table 2 shows a complete list of aquarium high pressure sodium lamps and
hps ballasts requirements as specified by their respective manufacturers. There is a trend in the reef aquarium hobby to use ballasts that do not match the lamp’s design specifications, often to “overdrive” a lamp, and hence, to generate more light output from a given lamp. This can lead to premature failure and shorter lamp life and, in some cases, explosive failure due to rupturing of the lamp’s inner and outer arc tube.
