All fluorescent light fixtures consist of at least lamp(s),fluorescent ballast, lamp holders and internal wiring. Some older types have "starters", too. The ballast is used to create the voltage and current necessary to start and illuminate the fluorescent lamp. In time, the ballast may need to be replaced.
When your fluorescent light flickers or makes a loud and annoying hum, a degrading ballast is the cause. The ballast takes in electricity and then regulates current to the bulbs. A typical ballast will generally last about 20 years, but cold environments and bad bulbs can decrease this lifespan significantly. You can get a new ballast at a hardware store or home center and install it in about 10 minutes. However, buying a ballast can be expensive, so consider pricing a brand-new fixture for comparison.
Before you go to the trouble of replacing the fluorescent fitting,Recognize a humming noise coming from your light fixtures?First, replace the tubes with new tubes,if it's light, that's good, not ok, check the starter, replace a new starter, If changing the tubes and starters does not solve the problem, the most likely trouble is the ballast.
Then buy correct ballasts with you to hardware store and replace it . Remark the number of tubes in your fixture and their wattage, length, type (T8, T12, T5, etc.). Remark also there may be two ballasts in a four-tube fixture, each ballast running two of the tubes.
Caution: Turn power off at the main panel before performing this repair.
