gas discharge lamps need a ballast to limit electric current. Modern electronic lighting ballasts use solid-state circuitry to transform the voltage and alter the frequency of the supplied power. This eliminates any flickering of the CFL and regulates power more efficiently than is possible with standard magnetic lighting ballasts.
HID Magnetic ballast, used for high-pressure sodium lamps(SVB) and metal halide vapour lamps(MHB)
and high-pressure mercury lamps(MVB)....

Electronic ballasts for HPS(high pressure sodium) lamps offer a host of benefits over conventional magnetic(core coil) ballasts, including greater luminance efficiency, outstanding energy-saving effect, greater light and color stability, lower lumen depreciation, faster warm-up and restrike times, less noise, elimination of flicker, longer lamp life, and less maintain cost etc., so electronic ballasts are an ideal green lighting product to replace their magnetic counterparts for better energy-saving and environment. The hps ballast provides the proper starting voltage, operating voltage and current to the lamp to initiate and sustain the arc. HID lamps have a negative resistance characteristic, which causes them to draw an increasing amount of current, hence need a current limiting device. The ballast provides these functions. There are several different ballast types used for for HID lighting. Basically, there are two primary distinctions between ballasts: "lag circuit" and "lead circuit" ballasts. The current in lag type ballasts is controlled by an inductive resistance in series with the lamp, whereas in lead type ballasts it current control is provided by both inductive and capacitive resistances in series with the lamp.

Some of the claims were valid for fixtures with magnetic ballasts, also known as core and coil ballasts.MH ballasts, perform much like the CWA ballasts for mercury lamps, and have the ANSI designation M-58 for 250W and M-59 for 400W. Often, you will find that the ballasts used for aquarium lighting have dual rating M-58 & H-37, M59 & H-33. Hence these ballasts can be used for both MH and MV lamps. But remember that these are CWA ballasts. In MH lamps, ballasts provide the starting voltage and ignition pulses (pulse-start lamps) necessary to ignite the lamp. Probe-start MH ballasts, however, can take as long as 10 to 20 minutes to restrike (re-start) a lamp. Pulse-start MH ballasts can restrike the lamp within 2 to 8 minutes of an interruption in current, because they provide high-voltage pulses to start these lamps....

American Mercury Vapor Ballast Section: Mercury Vapor ballasts have now been discontinued, and are generally no longer available. Some Metal Halide ballasts will also operate the equal,Mercury Vapor lamp - 175w, 250w, 400w and 1000w.
The mercury vapor lamp is a high intensity discharge lamp. It uses an arc through vaporized mercury in a high pressure tube to create very bright light directly from it's own arc. This is different from fluorescents which use the mercury vapor arc to create a weaker light that mainly creates UV light to excite the phosphors....

Light ballasts are necessary in all lighting fixtures equipped with an an arc source light bulb such as fluorescent, high pressure sodium or metal halide ballasts.
A ballast essentially functions as a power converter altering the incoming electrical current to provide the proper voltage and amperage for operating a given light source. Additionally, the ballast or ballast kit controls the starting function of the arc source lamp by providing either a preheating function or a simple voltage surge as required by the light bulb for correct ignition. Ballasts are generally rated for a specific lamp type and wattage or in the case of electronic fluorescent ballasts for a range of acceptable lamp types.
If you're planning on redoing the lighting in your business, you want the best of the best. And that means not just having a light fixture that looks good on the outside, it means keeping it working on the inside. At James Lighting, we care about what's going on with your project, which is why we encourage you to shop our selection of lighting ballasts. Simply defined, a ballast is an electrical component that regulates the amount of current in the electric circuit. Much like the engine of a car, a ballast is what's "under the hood."
As a general rule lamp and ballast combinations should have matching specifications to avoid early lamp failure or other serious electrical system issues....
