What's the sodium (SON) floodlight?
2014-01-03 15:54:48

A sodium floodlight is a gas discharge lamp, using sodium amongst other gases to produce a warm orange light. Ideal for use in the industrial areas and are often used as street lights and used to illuminate car parks. Very little light pollution is provided by this type of floodlight making it a popular choice.

This wall light is for home or general use. The fitting has a polycarbonate body construction making it vandal resistant and maintenance free. The clear prismatic light projecting lens coupled with a bright aluminium reflector offers an excellent spread of light focusing on illumination across and downwards. This type of lighting is ideal for residential use avoiding light pollution.

The fitting also comes with a fitted connector block and a cable gland to ease installation and also retain the fact that it is water proof .One the advantages of sodium lighting is that is it able to provide lighting which is soft and does not have the harsh glare of Metal Halide (HQI) lighting. This type of lighting is ideal for residential use avoiding light pollution.
Sodium floodlights are ideal for use both the industrial sector as well as domestically.

In the industrial sector, these floodlights are usually found outside factories and other industrial buildings. This could be for security or to illuminate the outside area whilst work is going on at night.

Usually, you will have a halogen floodlight on a sensor outside your house for security reasons. It is possible to use a sodium floodlight for this reason but it would have to stay illuminated and you will damage the lamp with stop-start operation.

Many street lights are also sodium, this is one of the most commonly found places for a sodium fitting.

Another advantage is the low cost of running this fitting, whilst only using 86 watts of electricity with an expected lamp life of 20,000 hours and providing the equivalent light to a 300 watt tungsten halogen with an expected lamp life of only 1500 hours.
